For many years, Jan. 1 was known as the feast of the Circumcision of the Lord and the Holy Name of Jesus. This feast was based on the Jewish custom of circumcising and naming a male child on the eighth day after birth.
However, an ancient tradition also celebrated the maternity of the Blessed Virgin Mary on this same day. Finally, in 1974, Pope Paul VI officially designated Jan. 1 as the Solemnity of Mary, the Holy Mother of God.
The feast of the Circumcision no longer appears on the liturgical calendar of the Roman Catholic Church, however, today is also a great day to sit and meditate on the Holy Name of Jesus and the many titles He is known by. Perhaps you have a prayer book devoted exclusively to all these names. I’m getting mine out.
Also, please consider helping me finish recording my next CD in honor of Our Lady. www.donnacorigibson.com/donate shows all the different levels of sponsorship.
Have a Blessed New Year!!!
Keep praying. Keep singing.
